Blacks want it because they are American, and Americans want to own the most beautiful parts and aspects of the human body. What about Ethiopians? They have narrow noses. Other Africans do too. But most slaves came from West Africa--Ghana, Nigeria, etc--those tribes have wide flatish noses. So you could say everyone wants an Ethiopian nose--or African.
Not to mention Asians. It's wrong to think of nose jobs as something only African Americans have.

What they are really saying is the propaganda has been successful. Years of television and magazine portraying Caucasian as the most beautiful in the world. Great discussion and page about African-American rhinoplasty. I think one of the most telltale signs (and most overdone procedure) is the alar-base reduction for all ethnic types of rhinoplasty. Overly effacing an ethnic nose can make a person not only not look good but not look natural. Cultural preservation should be our most desired elements but just softening features rather than eliminating them. Just my opinions. They are not necessarily "right". They are just how I see African rhinoplasty.

I think it's a complex that afro americans need to ignore. The color of our skin is such a bad thing yet millions of white people spend millions of dollars and hours at tanning salons. We need to embrace the things that make us better. No race is perfect. When i was growing up in the caribbean, looking at TV made you believe that every white person was slim and beautiful, boy was i surprise to see some hedious white people when I came to school in north america. Love yourself.
I think of all the races it seems black people have a harder time accepting that we also have the right to change the way we look. Black celebrities who choose to go under the knife may not be making it public because they choose not to talk about it. Black people need to wake up and realise there is nothing wrong with going under the knife if thats what someone has chosen to do. Other races don't appear to make such a big deal out of it. I don't see why someone should have to just make do and be unhappy when they could have surgery if it makes them happy. Well, my personal experience wanting to have a narrower nose (I am a dark hispanic)was something that I never hided
and I even shared with my friends. I never felt like since I was hispanic I would want to appeal to a certain race. I wanted to flatten my facial features, period!
Of course I didn't want to have a nose that didn't go along with the rest of my face.
I believe that the same goes for African-americans. They don't want to look white , they just want to have a thinner nose to enhance their features like anybody else.

Beyonce looked much prettier (and blacker) before her nose job. I think her nose job really dilutes what was once an extremely naturally pretty face. Check out before/after pictures. I feel black women should avoid nose jobs. It is our birth right to tend toward big noses. This could be said for Jewish women too, and they too need to stop with the nose jobs. Nose jobs make a girl look less interesting, and pretty in a plainer way. Halle Berry is another one-- I think she was much *cuter* with her old, more chunky nose. Yes she is beautiful, period. But that chunky little nose she had was just CUTE you know what I mean? Understand that no matter what, black women can't be taken as "pretty" by Hollywood, so why true? For example, People talked about Angelina Jolie' big lips, but never talked about black womens beautiful lips- when we've had big lips forever. What I'm saying is, they can't see beauty as beauty on black face anyway, no matter what you do. It will always be pretty "for a black woman", even if they would never say so. Hollywood will gush til kingdom come over Angelina Jolie and Liv Tyler's (sort of) big lips ....but even though big lips are apparantly "in" now -- They won't even comment on black womens big lips! They act like Angelina Jolie invented big lips, and they never commented on any black actresses big lips before she came around -- big lips on a black woman were a liability or "too black" or else just ignored, not considered a beauty asset. So what I am saying is ...Hollywood cannot see black as GORGEOUS anyway, so stop trying, and love yourselves. And same goes for all these other ethnic groups making themselves look totally boring instead of working what their ancestors gave them.
Think of all the black celebrity women with big lips, past and present, they never ever say when they talk about her "oh her amazing lips!" -- even though she has them. To all black women waning to get nose jobs: it's your money and your body; do whatever makes you happy. People will always have comments about your appearance whether you look good or not, so do it for yourself. Bigger noses do tend to take the attention away from a person's other facial features (why do you think Alex Evans Photoshops his nose?) and reducing the size makes everything look in proportion. Logan Browning has a 'black' nose, but a smaller one and she's still pretty. It's the size that counts more than the shape most of the time.

To tell you honestly, people who get a surgery is stupid. For example, enlargement breast,eyelid, facial and body structure, etc,. Don't they think at the end they going to get old and die anyway? Maybe I get a little bit understanding as they are the public figures, but on my opinion personally, the artists and celebrities are accepted because they are talented. As far as I know, their talent make them shines but to get a surgery is only brings negative speculation on them.

The ubiquitousness of the modern media deluges the public with so many images that it's really naive to try to argue that this type of ethnic tweaking has nothing to do with increased exposure to various peoples with various features, chiefly whites since it is those with Euro features who have historically been propped up as the supreme objects of beauty.
However, this "self-hate" rhetoric doesn't take into account that it affects ALL of us and is a NATURAL consequence of being exposed to different groups. I think that we need to exercise some discrimination about the prevailing global context rather than being so quick to sling-out tired, reactionary, reductionist diatribes accusing people of hating themselves. Are we partially denying the uniqueness of our ethnicity? Yes. However, if bankupt self-esteem is the issue, how is attacking people for something we all grapple with going to help? We live in such a globalized, linked world these days that the grass is always going to look better on the other side.
People also fail to take into account shifting physical aesthetics. When I was younger it was not fashionable to have a large butt, and now I hear even white people praising an well endowed ass. It affects us all. Be mindful of the influences yet also apply some compassion and stop being to so quick to to wave your blacker-than-thou (or whatever race) stick in order to validate yourself.
Some black people are more attractive than others black people. Some white people are more attractive than other white people. Do white people get rhinoplasty to look whiter. NO! White people who opt for plastic surgery want to improve there looks, just like black people get plastic sugery.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with getting certain procedures done to enhance your overall body image. If it makes someone happy, then leave them to it. Why must everyone judge? You should not have a say unless that person is your own child, other than that the only being who can judge is God. I have had dental veneers, and I have no regrets. It has made me more confident, and just like rhinoplasty - it is quite noticeable to people who knew me before the procedure. I have a friend who has had her nose done and it suits her so well, yes she does get remarks from a few people but all in all she has had good reception. True there are those who seem to set out to create a new face for themselves (i.e. Heidi Montag and Lil Kim) and those people should seek a pyschiatrist first before going under the knife. And people should really remember that alot of these celebrities are rich enough to hire talented make p artists, who can hide their flaws and contour that nose. Truly it's all smokes and mirrors on these celebs (Beyonce, Serena Williams and Halle Berry).

I was thinking about getting this until I read your post, you put everything back into perspective for me. Bless you. I think I'm good with how I look, I was made to look the way I am for a reason and who wants to keep having to go back every few years to get revisions because your nose started trying to grow back wide again. And also when I have kids they're going to have momma's same big nose, how can I tell them to be happy with how God made them and that they are wonderfully made in God's image if I'm a hypocrite and went out and changed my own darn nose. So what about the african americans who are mixedrace? who come from french, irish and native american background or could be of east african descent?, who have mixed features? I find this somewhat a prejudice towards blacks in general who just want to enhance their beauty, no one ever said they want to be white, just because they want a straight nose, or else whites wouldn't be the majority of the ones get nose jobs. This is just another way plastic surgeons want to get paid without putting any effort into their practice.

I have being subjected to mockery about the size of my nosril and if I work hard to change it , does it mean i want to look like a white woman. It's a big no but i want to enhance my confidence and stop looking gloomy. I can't take photo because I thought everyone will be laughing at my big nostrils hence doing any thing to change the alar base of my nose will be a positive thing to me. I am proud of who I am but sometimes you miss out on certain things because of lack of confidence because of certain insecutity of some part of the body and I think this is common for all ethnic groups.
Why do a lot of these rhinoplasty accused look alarmingly the same as their teen pictures (remember your face does change as you grow, especially the change from teen to adult). The Destiny's Child ladies look the same to me apart from make-up techiques, and baby fat being gone from the face.
