Gastric bypass versus lap band surgery
63Everything is about weight loss
For weight loss there are so many options available and the
two surgeries that are there which you can do when you trying to lose that
weight and that is particularly true for the people with morbid obesity and
that is the gastric bypass surgery and the other one is the lap band surgery or
the so called lap-band surgery. These are also known as the bariatric
procedures. The gastric bypass surgery is also referred by a lot of people as
gastric RNY bypass surgery or the roux en y gastric bypass.
Each of the bariatric procedures has its own set of risks
and limitations and side effects and complications so it is not only about the
weight loss which you need to compare but you will need to compare as to how
much of risk and complications are there for you. In some cases it may be such
that you have really no risk where you have a risk in the other. This differs
from person to person based on the type of surgery and the personal
characteristics. The major risk is not afterwards but rather the risk there
when the surgery is being performed.
The benefits of both the surgeries because of the weight
loss are very much there and that means that you general health will improve.
The obese and over weight people have a risk of sleep apnea, hypertension and
level II diabetes.
Gastric bypass surgery vs. lap-band surgery has showed that lap band surgery is more effective than the gastric bypass surgery. There were initial successes with the gastric bypass surgery and now there is more success with gastric banding or the so called lap banding. This decision is tough and that is why it is essential that you always make sure that you considered all factors including the insurance costs.
Comparison between lap band and gastric bypass
Now gastric bypass surgery involves that the stomach is cut and stapled and that means that the smaller part of the stomach is there and reattached intestine are there with the smaller part and the bigger part is not even there.
Lap band is a procedure where the silicone ring is put at the top of the stomach and then there is a tube attached to the small balloon which is attached to the lap band. This tube or access port is somewhere on the left hand side of the stomach and this can be adjusted using the saline solution. Each time you wish to have a weight loss goal which is more stringent than the earlier one then you can easily make sure that the saline solution is used to tighten the silicone rings and that way you can restrict the food intake and achieve your weight loss goal. Again within each type of surgery there is the open surgery and then there is the laparoscopic surgery. The open surgery will involve cutting open the abdomen whereas in the laparoscopic surgery it is the small incision made to put the medical instruments and then making sure that camera is also there.
There are other options also available and these are the sleeve gastronomy as well as the bypass revision.

There's a simplified interactive gastric bypass over at www.surgerysquad.com for free if anyone's interested in seeing what happens in the procedure (this is for RNY laparoscopic, not lap band)

Thank you for your article in comparing the bariatric procedures of gastric bypass versus lap-band surgery. As you point out, there are possible risks and complications associated with both procedures to lose weight. It is very important for patients to be well informed when making the choice between Lap-Band® surgery or a gastric bypass, so I thank you for your contribution.
