Overdraft protection checking accounts

what is overdraft protection ?

When you write a check you are assuming that you have money in the bank and
very rightfully so. But mistakes can happen and it is these mistakes that
can cause havoc on your credit history if done repeatedly. That is why
most of the banks offer what is called as the overdraft protections.

Overdraft protection will mean that in case you have written a check
mistakenly for an amount which is not there in your account then you
definitely will have two things happen and one of them is that the bank
will charge you a non sufficient funds fee called the NSF Fee and also
the person to whom you have written the check may even use you or they may
charge the bounced check fee.

When you open a checking account then you should always ask for a checking
account which is the overdraft protection checking account and that account
is called the overdraft protection checking account. With this in place
there are a number of benefits that you will get.

Let us assume that you write a check assuming that you have $1000 dollar in
your account but by mistake you forgot that you had written another check a
few days ago for $200. That means that this check that you have written for
$1000.00 will bounce. Now there are two scenarios in this case. First in
the case that you do not have overdraft protection the bank will return
this cheek and will charge you the Non sufficient funds fee and the party to
whom you have written the check will ask for the bounce check fee that their
bank has charged them, This is the fee part and the other part of this is
the fact that there will now be chance that your credit has gone and on the
Chexsystems.

Save money with overdraft protection

In the second scenario you have opted for the overdraft protection
checking account and in this case the bank with which you have the checking
account will simply honor the check. The reason is that you have overdraft
protection. Of course there the amount that was given as overdraft is now
being treated as loan to you and you will be charged interest on that. On top
of it every time there is overdraft you will be charge some fees. That said
it will help you get good credit report and you will never end on the
Chexsystems.

A lot of banks also offer the overdraft privilege whereby they extend the
overdraft protection automatically to your accounts and they will never
ask you that you need the overdraft facility or not. This is known as
overdraft privilege and not overdraft protection.

The bets thing to do is to make sure that you have the account register
reconciled and balanced and avoid the fees even on the over draft. Also a
lot of banks do not cover the ATM withdrawals and debit card transactions so
make sure that you know what are the fees for those and if these are covered
by the overdraft protection.
